Budgeting is more important than ever, with the current cost of housing and goods

But what about your health and fitness goals? Joining a gym is a great idea, and there's also the option to build a home gym for family and friends. With the right group of motivated people in your locale, you can train together, get healthy and fit, and save money all at the same time.

Today we'll be talking about comprehensive home gyms, starting at about $4k and up to $6k investment. If you're looking to start your home gym on a budget, see our article "Top 5 pieces of equipment to start your home gym on a budget".

Let's start from the ground up;

Flooring and or AstroTurf. Both great options, rubber flooring is the standard in most gyms, with astro turf now being used as the sled push or sprint zone. However in the recent year or two, we've started seeing entire gyms of astro turf too, so we're always evolving in the Australian gym industry. Budget for flooring for most home gyms - 9 to 30 square meters.

Next would be the bigger pieces, the power racks, and GHDs, the plyo boxes etc. For a home gym I would start with the power rack, something like our HD Half Rack, or Light Commercial Power Cage with seated row and lat pulldown would be ideal. Both of these are under $1000. If you have more budget and want the Valkyrie quality... you know the kind of quality where you'll be leaving your grandchildren the rack, then step up to a Valkyrie VSPX2 Half Cage. Next, I'd choose a 3in1 Foam Plyo box, a GHD Glute Ham Developer or Hip Thrust Combo, the Hip Thrust combo would definitely be a better choice as its'5 machines in one, including a Nordic or floor GHD. Not quite the same as a traditional GHD, but still devastatingly brutal to your hamstring strength programming.

Next comes the Valkyrie Air Bike, when buying in our home gym bundle you get a discount down to $999. This bike is great for anyone who truly wants to get fit... there's no hiding from this bike. With both hands and legs working at the same time, and full data on your calories, distance and time spent, this brutal bike will leave you in tears, in exactly the right way. a must have to improve your METCONS.

Finally I'd add in some smaller items and accessories. I'd start with a barbell and bumper package, like the Black Series 150, or the BHP2 or HD2 ranges. And if you've selected one of our half cages they already include barbell and plate storage. If you're going for a rack that doesn't have storage, or if you just need more, then one of our Olympic weight trees is the best choice. I'd also go for a kettlebell 3 pack, pick one of our pre made packages and save $ on the bells, and get a big variety at the same time. A few hex dumbbells would be good, along with some basic accessories like a medicine ball, wall ball, skipping ropes, resistance tubing and power bands. We have a pre-made home accessory pack here.

So budget for each area;

Flooring - $30 sqm - $270 to $900 depending on your SQM
Astro turf - $30sqm, only available in pre made rolls
Power Rack - $1000 up to $2800
Plyo Box 3in1 - $250
GHD -$750
Hip Thrust Combo - $899 (5 machines in 1)
Barbell and Bumper Pack - $1000
Kettlebell 3 Pack - $240
Hex Dumbbells - $150
Accessories pack - $200

So depending on your choices you could range between $3800 and $5800 for a very decent home gym. And then there's also the option of doing your gym in phases, or even our new 12 month interest free program.

When you calculate the costs of gym memberships per week, could a home gym be a great investment for your health, and the health of your friends and family?

*Price guides did not factor freight and installation costs, as in Australia distance differences is such a huge factor.
